 Dear Members, Supporters;
It may be taking a while, but we can see the change happening faster than ever before. Please read on, we want you to know why.
You may recall in July of 2011 a Dublin man, John Byrne, who has been living rough for over 20 years had his rabbit, Barney, thrown callously into the River Liffey by a passerby. Mr. Byrne risked his life by jumping into the freezing cold river to save Barney. Click hereto watch the dramatic rescue that touched our nation. Shortly afterwards the person responsible for abusing the rabbit was apprehended. ARAN stepped in to present Mr. Byrne with our 'Compassionate Citizen Award' for the bravery and kindness he shown his rabbit - the story prompted national media headlines with international outlets too. Since we presented the award to Mr. Byrne we have closely followed the case and pushed for the youth who has over 130 previous convictions to be jailed on grounds of cruelty to animals with our outdated Protection of Animals Act that dates back to 1911. The good news is that this week we were in court with Mr. Byrne and were pleased that Gary Kearney, who is currently serving a six year jail sentence, be given a four month sentence on top of what he is already doing, for throwing Barney into the river. Outside the court a group of cameras, photographers and journalists were waiting to hear of the outcome and requested comment from Mr. Byrne and ARAN. We used this as a perfect opportunity yet againto get word out there about animal abuse, the need for a stronger Animal Health and Welfare Bill and it turned out to be yet another massive hit. Click here for a video that sums up the events around the case along with some TV news reports. ARAN was delighted with the four month sentence handed down, the judge stated he was not going to be lenient and that it was a serious case. Most animal abuse cases rarely make it to court, let alone the offenders getting a fine, so four months is to be welcomed. Of course we also asked for a psychological evaluation of Kearney and a personal ban on owning animals for life. We did not get this however. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIgmMX4nrE0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MNj1J58h2s
RESCUE MAY 2013 We were recently called to assist 2 dogs and a cat in the Balla area as their owner was in hospital and not expected to return home. The photographs will describe to you what we found! Initially 2 lovely natured collies, a little shy but totally non-aggressive, who were free to roam if they wished and had a barn to sleep in. They had not left the property despite the fact their owner was not in residence. What loyalty! Both were of good weight and had so obviously not been abused, but.............the matting is unbelievable and the poor creatures would be so uncomfortable, and in pain with that and the horrendous ingrowing dew claws. Then it was noticed that both them had what was thought to be just an infection in the mouth, but in fact on closer veterinary examination turned out to be absolutely ulcerated, and as if they had attempted to digest some form of toxic material and changed their mind. We are hoping that whatever it was has not progressed further into their bodies causing kidney and liver damage, only time will tell regarding that. In the meantime they are receiving antbiotics and pain relief to ease their suffering. It will take time to restore them to a good condition, and they are both beautiful looking with natures to match. If anyone could help with fostering or any small donation to assist with their recovery it would be very much appreciated.
Both dogs were also very friendly with the beautiful tortoiseshell cat on the property. See kitten and cats rehoming page for picture She is a very pretty, affectionate young female cat, who we have had spayed & vaccinated, and would be available to go to a home immediately. Fortunately she was healthy, apart from being a bit on the skinny side, but the good food she will receive now will improve her weight in a very short period of time.
ANGEL CRUELTY APRIL 2013
This poor girl was handed in to us by a member of the public. It would appear she has been used as a breeding machine as is now surplus to requirements!! She still has milk so would have recently had puppies. She is very thin and underweight. Despite all of this she is a friendly girl although a little nervous to begin with but she is responding well the the TLC she is now receiving. If anyone can offer hera loving home then please contact us. Please call 09496 31888 or 086 803 2592 email

CRUELTY MARCH 2013 CARLOW
Carlow was reported to us as a stray in the Mulranny area. When we requested and received a photo of him we were shocked at the misery in his eyes, and then noticed his paws were red raw indicating he urgently needed veterinary treatment. We made arrangements to transport him to a vet in Castlebar (thanks Kieran) and upon examination poor Carlow has the worst skin infection possibly the vet has ever seen, it is scabbed and scalded by his own urine and he has obviously been forced to live in his own filth! It is going to take time to make him well, but he is such a friendly, gentle dog and worth all the money and work we will have to put into his care. We will update regarding his progress and hope to show a much happier dog in a short space of time.
CRUELTY HEIDI Heidi is approximately 2 years old and the Mother of pups born on Achill Island over the Christmas holidays. Those of you who follow our web site will know that she was unable to cope with the pups and they were brought into care, hand reared and eventually rehomed. It has taken three months to gain sufficient trust to enable anyone to get this dog into a vet in order to have her spayed, she simply could not be left roaming free on Achill constantly giving birth to pups that she did not seem to know how to feed or care for in any way. You only have to look at the misery in her face to see how much she's suffered. To see a dog so terrified that it is trying to hide in the corner of one of our kennels is awful, however she deserves the chance of a life and will be well cared for. Despite her terror there is no aggression in Heidi and it is felt that each day she should lose a little of her fear. She is being treated with lots of love and kindness and in our experience all dogs eventually respond to this. She is in good physical condition thanks to Mike and his family who have fed her and worked hard to be able to bring her into our care, our thanks to them for their patience, caring and kind attitude. Heidi would do well with one to one foster care but we have none available at the moment, so if anyone out there feels they could work to restore her confidence in humans we would be so pleased to hear from you. CRUELTY FEBRUARY 2013 PIPPIN
This poor dog is in a shocking state and was so ill it collapsed on the doorstep of a member of the public in Westport yesterday. He is currently receiving veterinary treatment, has a chest infection, low temperature and severe malnutrition and badly infected skin. He weighs only 15kg and should be between 35kg-40kg.
PUPPIES CRUELTY FEBRUARY 2013
The two poor babies were found in a carpark in Cloonfad. They appear to have been dumped. They were very cold, filthy dirty and covered in lice. They are now recovering in our care and responding very well indeed to the TLC they are now getting. They are about 6 weeks old
CRUELTY DILLON JANUARY 2013
We have called this poor boy Dillon. Dillon is a 2 years old rottweiler and was heartlessly abandoned by his owner. Thankfully a kind member of the public took care of him until we could bring him in to care. When he arrived in our care he weighed just 19kg, less than half his normal body weight.
CRUELTY SPARROW JANUARY 2013
This pathetic looking female cat was handed into us having been found in this shocking state in the Tuam area. How anyone could allow an animal to get into this state is beyond us! She's friendly, used to people and uses a litter tray, so therefore must have been someone's pet. If she had been properly cared for she would have been a gorgeous looking semi-long haired cat. We named her 'Sparrow' as a sparrow probably weighs more than she does, she's so malnourished and was filthy. Cats are the cleanest of creatures and the only time they do not clean their coats is when they are too ill or have totally given up on life. We are all hoping we can turn her life around and that lots of tlc, food and comfort will do the trick.
CRUELTY DECEMBER 2012
This poor creature was reported by a member of the public from the Charlestown area. She had seen the dog for 2/3 days and offered food, but it wouldn't eat. Kindly she took the poor dog to the vets on our behalf, for which we thank her. An old female, in a shocking state her coat filthy, full of matted hair (some of which was cut away before these photo's were taken), painfully thin underneath the matting, and even worse she could not see and was walking around in circles! She was found to have cataracts in both eyes, was incontinent, freezing cold and wet through. Would only drink and not eat, which suggested she had a diabetic problem, but we were not going to subject her to the misery of blood testing, causing her more misery. What a terrible way for a dog to end its life! Unfortunately nothing could be done to save her as she was too old and could not withstand any kind treatment - and sadly we had to let her go after she had plenty of tlc and a warm bed. This dog would have been a beautiful looking creature - and not too long ago either, with care and attention she need never have ended up in this shameful condition. If you recognise her then please let us know as her owner would need a serious talking to! Shame on them!
CRUELTY ALFIE NOVEMBER 2012
Alfie is a gorgeous long haired kitten found in a ditch with a badly injured leg and tail (not shown). He has been treated at the vets but unfortunately there is a strong possibility he will lose his leg.
CRUELTY MAEVE NOVEMBER 2012
We named this poor little kitten 'Maeve'. She was found with a very badly gashed leg, which fortunately is responding to treatment but she would have been in a lot of pain. Despite her trauma and discomfort she is the dearest little girl, so friendly, and purrs like a little engine., s
CRUELTY SEPTEMBER 2012
This lovely natured female was found abandoned in a ditch in Ballinlough with 6 one day old pups! Thankfully all now are doing well. The pups 5 male and one female are now a week old and appear to be lovely chunky and healthy.
FAYE SEPTEMBER 2012 CRUELTY
We named this dear, pathetic little female collie 'Faye', she appears to have been abandoned in the Cloonfad area and was handed into us by a member of the public. Shy but very friendly, she is unbelievably thin, and you can see that a hand virtually fits around her rear, she is as light as a feather. Difficult to determine her age at this point in time but we will be able to tell better as she fills out. Poor Faye was so happy to have a nice clean, warm bed and a friendly hug.
FOUND CRUELTY SEPTEMBER 2012 We received a call for urgent help with a dog standing in the middle of the road and walking around in circles, obviously injured and in great distress, in the Isleandy area. He was a male collie with some old injuries to his leg and shoulder, which appear to have been left untreated and healed, leaving him with a limp. However, the poor fella was very mature, appeared to be totally disorientated and his head tilted to one side. We believe he had another knock from a car and was in very poor shape, He was rushed to the vets with his life in the balance, he was made comfortable with sedation and pain relief. He was wearing a collar but no id and had recently been clipped. Every effort was made to find the owners of this poor dog but with no ID tag or microchip it proved an impossible task. He injuries were just to great and the decision was taken to end the suffering for this poor dog. Our thanks to Elaine without whose help in getting him to a vet would have meant more suffering for this poor dog.
FOUND CRUELTY JUNE 2012
After a call from local Gardai these 2 dogs were rescued from the Charlestown area. The poor creatures are absolutely terrified and bearing a lot of wounds that appear to be dog bites. Please call 09496 31888 or 086 803 2592 email

ABBY CRUELTY MAY 2012
Yesterday (24.5.2012) we collected this poor creature from the vets after having a week of intensive treatment. She is just a pup at 7 months old and barely recognisable as a bred Shitzhu! When we tell her story then we hope it will serve as a warning to anyone agreeing to buy a pup from an unrecognised breeder, without papers, receipt, or seeing the conditions they were reared in, also the parents of pups on offer. Not to mention agreeing to meet at a garage/supermarket or the like. This is what happened to little Abby, she was passed over at a Garage to someone who paid good money and hoped for a nicely bred Shitzhu pup, although she was told it had a 'slight problem'. No indication was given of the torture this pup has endured for 5 months until she was brought to our attention. She was sold with scabies which went untreated for a while and thereafter undiagnosed, during this time Abby's skin was on fire, she scratched until she bled, her skin was eaten away and blackened, the mites and scratching causing a severe infection. She had bitten at her tail until it was thought it would have to be amputated, but we think we may have saved it now, her misery and frustration so great that she had to bite at the tail when she could not reach other parts of her body that drove her demented with itching. She has been to hell and back. As of today she is happy and wagging what is left of her little tail. Her hair is beginning to grow and although her whole body is on fire to the touch, thankfully she cannot feel it due to the medication. Obviously she needs a caring home and hopefully a full cure will be had within not too long a period of time. So we wish to remind people again to NOT EVER PURCHASE A PUP THROUGH A CAR WINDOW AT A GARAGE! You are looking at what could be the results! Torture for the pup, misery and expense for the owner. ********************************** Sadly Abby's story has not ended well. Due to the stress of coping with life and her medical problems futher medical complications arose and the decision was taken to end her suffering and she was put to sleep. Please see our in memory page. This re-inforces our advice not to buy from people selling dogs in petrol;l stations and car parks etc.
DAISY CRUELTY MAY 2012
Daisy was found in a road in Ballaghaderreen bleeding very badly from her face and underweight. It would appear that she had been bitten and the skin on her face was severely infected. She is now receiving veterinary care and responding well to treatment. Thanks to the ladies that cared for Daisy overnight and that are now fostering her.
BEAU CRUELTY MAY 2012 We called this poor dog Beau. Found in a cemetery in Foxford he was so scared he had to be sedated to enable us to help him. He weighed only 12.5kg. By the marks around his neck it would appear that he had been tied up. The fur on part of his back was singed. Yet another sweet natured dog left to suffer. Beau is now in foster care and is making progress .With careful feeding and lots of tlc we hope to see him fit and well soon and ready for a new home.
SOPHIE CRUELTY APRIL 2012

We have named this poor girl Sophie. Yet another hound found abandoned and severely underweight. She is currently receiving veterinary care for a severe skin infection. . Despite all this she is very friendly and even managed to wag her tail despite all the discomfort she is in.
DOLLY CRUELTY APRIL 2012
Dolly is a young female dog found injured and very afraid in the Ballinrobe area. Our thanks to the kind members of the public who fed, watered and made friends with her until they could handle her sufficiently to get to the vets on our behalf. The injuries appear to be due to bites! She has been treated and is responding well, yet again another beautiful natured, gentle and quiet young dog totally neglected and left with injuries untreated.
CRUELTY LULU MARCH 2012
This poor little pup is a female collie just 8 weeks old. The first photo shows her happy, healthy and in excellent condition. Within minutes of the photo being taken the pup and children went out to play and the pup was heard screaming and screaming - she had been put in a container full of red hot ashes! The second photo shows some of the burns mostly on her underbelly and back legs, the third of a very depressed pup, her coat all singed and no whiskers. She is lucky to be alive as the shock alone could have killed her.
CRUELTY TEDDY March 2012
We named this poor male dog 'Teddy'. Rescued from a ditch in the Foxford area, full of matted hair. Too weak to move,he did not even have the energy to get up out of the ditch and had to be carried to the car. He's a mature dog and a real sweetheart, we think he had given up wanting to survive and he was so depressed. After 2 days under vet care he is coming around nicely, has had a very small walk and will have the worst of the matting removed, but is not able for a 'shampoo and set' yet.
TIN-TIN FEBRUARY 2012
This sweet natured dog was found in an appalling state of matted filth. He must have been in so much discomfort! Underweight and confused he is now safely in our care.
MAGGIE FEBRUARY 2012
We named this poor dog 'Maggie' after she was found trapped in barbed wire. She appeared to have been there quite a few days and had a chest infection, was freezing cold, infested with fleas and having various cuts over her body, but the worst injuries were to her ears, which were also badly infected, the infection having travelled as far as it could to the depths of the ear canal. Unfortunately as the ear infection was clearing, pieces of her left ear began to rot and drop off resulting in the whole ear having to be removed. She made a fantastic recovery thanks to great care by vets and foster Mum and Dad Carol and Jim and eventually found a wonderful home. KEELY CRUELTY JANUARY 2012 We named this poor dog KEELY, he's male and fully grown. Handed in for our care from Achill Island he was rushed straight to a vet. Keely could be described as a skeleton with fur, and weighs only 12 kg. Its a miracle he is still alive. He's the sweetest natured dog and it is so sad for all concerned to see any animal left to suffer in this condition. With careful feeding and care we hope to see him fit and well in the fullness of time. Our thanks to the kind people who called us instead of ignoring his plight. If you can help in any way by offering a permanent or temporary home please do call us. Please call 09496 31888 or 086 803 2592 email

JANUARY 2012 - CRUELTY These 2 male collie pups were heartlessly abandoned on a bog, almost 4 weeks old. They are currently in the vets fighting for their lives and we are hoping they pull through. Yet again we are faced with this cruel abandonment of young pups who need not be born in the first place! Please, please remind anyone you know with unneutered/unspayed pets to apply for discounted price vouchers to avoid unwanted litters of pups/kittens. Please call 09496 31888 or 086 803 2592 email

December, 2011 These 2 adorable terrier x pups were heartlessly thrown from a car in a plastic bag. Fortunately for them a lady out walking her own dog saw the incident and brought them to us. Only approx 5 weeks old they were successfully reared and rehomed.
These 2 hounds were found in the Castlebar area by a member of the public. They are shocked by the terrible condition they are in. Every bone in their poor bodies is sticking out, they have skin conditions, pressure sores, their paws appear to have been burned by a substance and they also have bits of tar stuck to them. Obviously they are suffering from severe malnutrition and will need careful feeding. We are hoping its not too late! Both such gentle creatures as can be seen by the photo of them eating from the same bowl - although starving they will not fight over food! Currently being fostered by the person who found them (we are full) it would be appreciated if anyone could donate a cast-off dog coat, bag of sensitive food or any small donation to help towards the vets bills for them.
CRUELTY CASE
We named this poor dog 'Tasha', rescued on 14th November from the main Claremorris Road. She was so exhausted she just fell into Marian's arms! Underweight and with fresh cuts/gashes all over her body, her paws bleeding, she offered no resistance at all, and instead just wanted a big cuddle. We believe she may have been someone's pet as although she is so depressed its obvious she has been loved and cared for by someone - and is desperate for affection. A beautiful dog, unusual in her looks she is resting and eating and slowly feeling better. If anyone recognises her or can offer a permanent or temporary home it would help her recover from her obviously traumatic experience so much faster. December, 2011 Tasha looking and feeling so much better - she really is the most beautiful natured dog. Please call 09496 31888 or 086 803 2592 email

CRUELTY & RESCUE This dog was rescued and brought into care from a filthy shed, with no bedding, water, or comfort of any kind. Chained, fed on bread and milk, forced to lie in his own excrement, he's blind and has cataracts, which probably could have been avoided if treatment had been sought earlier. 10 years old, he had no access to outdoors at all, no companionship and a miserable existence. Now safe, washed & eating normal food he at least has a quality of life!

26.8.11 Maeve is a young female hound mix, approximately one year old, who we believe was ejected from a black car on the main road from Kiltimagh to Bohola. It took several volunteers to recover her and bring to safety, she was so afraid, is very malnourished, has some slight damage to one of her toes, which can easily be put right. She has been worm/flea treated, had her first vaccination and been vet checked. A dear, gentle dog, who walks well on a lead, is good with people and other dogs. Very placid natured, but we would not rehome with cats or chickens.
22.8.2011 We named this beautiful dog 'Triton'. He is a pure bred male Kerry Blue, a mature dog, not yet neutered due to the severe infection that can clearly be seen on his back. Before being vet treated this horrendous wound was infested with maggotts, the flesh rotting. We are appalled that a dog could be allowed to get into this condition. He would have been in agony!
CRUELTY & RESCUE
Elliott is a young terrier mix male dog who was rescued from the Claremorris area by a kind member of the public who handed him into us. What he saw upset him and he took pity on Elliott who, at first sight, appears to have 3 legs, upon closer inspection it can be seen that his front leg is curled way up into his chest and the paw is at chest level. He cannot use this leg at all but can get around quite well. Children were seen pushing him over, which was so easy to do as he's only small, finding the whole episode highly amusing. Disgraceful behaviour towards an innocent creature - wish we knew who they were. Elliott is now safely in our care and we are awaiting veterinary inspection and advice as to which way we can do the best for him. One would wonder who's care has he been in until now?
Nina was abandoned in September, 2010, a female Beagle approx 6 years old. She was emaciated, heavily pregnant, totally depressed & had just about given up wanting to carry on with life. We took her straight to the vets and had her checked out, she had a lump on her neck, that was treated as an abcess with antibiotics, she was wormed, thoroughly examined and we were told that her pregnancy was too advanced to be terminated. We would have done this due to her age & terrible condition. She came out of her depression after lots of tlc, rest, good food etc., enjoyed her little walks, pottered around the kennelling area after Marian, no trouble at all. Happy in her own little way and so sweet natured. Eventually the time came for her to give birth, all the signs were there but nothing seemed to be happening, so we made a mad dash to the vets late at night only to find that she needed an urgent caesarean operation and her poor pups were all dead inside her. She nearly died and needed a month to recover. We placed her with Christine, who kindly fostered her, she lived indoors, loved sleeping on the settee and in front of the fire, slowly gained strength, loved to go out for a walk, her little tail wagging constantly.
Early January Nina was well able to be spayed before going to the UK to a wonderful home, arrangements were made for the spaying & travel, her new family alerted as to her arrival and everyone was thrilled that after all these months of nurturing her she was finally going to such caring people who had waited such a long time for her.
After spaying Nina did not seem too well, although the operation was uncomplicated and the mysterious lump removed at the same time. Within 2 days we had to take her back to the vets only to find that her red blood cell count was very low and she went downhill rapidly - 2 days later kidney failure set in and we had no choice but to put her to sleep. Obviously the lump was a form of lymphona and had invaded her whole system - nothing showed on a scan but the blood tests told the story.....
Poor Nina, after all she had been through and all our attempts to restore her to health and onto a lovely forever home, she finally lost her battle for life.
We are all very sad at her loss. Our sincere thanks to Chris & Jenny, UK, for their very generous donation towards her treatment.
December 2010. Despite all our efforts this adorable young cat did not survive the hip operation needed. Handed into us with a smashed leg and hip requiring immediate surgery. She was friendly and sweet natured. We took the loss very badly as it is so rare we lose the life of a rescued animal.

We named this poor dog Arnie. He was found howling in a ditch in the Cloonfad area. Its no wonder he was howling! Arnie's severe injuries to his back leg were at least a week old, it had been badly broken, his knee had been pulled out of place altogether, with the cartildge lodged farther down his leg, the whole leg was infected. He must have been in agony! Most certainly he was placed in the ditch by someone who was fully aware of his injuries. How heartless & cruel! There were no other options but to amputate his leg in order to save his life. He's a young dog, so gentle & friendly, wagged his tail upon being rescued despite his pain. At the moment he will not even attempt to walk and if you can offer a permanent or temporary home do please contact us as kennelling is no place for a dog that has suffered so much to recuperate. If you recognise him please do let us know.
14.7.2010 This adorable little kitten was handed into Mayo Spca after being found in a ditch at the side of the road. His horrific injuries are consistent yet again with being thrown from a vehicle. His jaw is broken, the skin missing from his lip and severe injuries to his eye, yet despite being in considerable pain he could not stop eating, we named him Billy and he should make a recovery in time and not without considerable expense. No animal deserves to be treated in this manner. He is still friendly & affectionate towards humans! If anyone can foster Billy whilst he is recuperating do please call us. Billy has now had successful surgery on his broken jaw and torn lip, we know he still looks in a shocking state, but he's happy, pain free, purring, eating, drinking and so friendly. What a special kitten, a born survivor who after all his suffering is still affectionate to humans!
Mikey is a tiny 6 week old kitten who we believe was thrown from a car with a litter mate. The litter mate was squashed on the road, Mikey survived and will recover from his cuts, bruises & shock. He's currently receiving veterinary treatment. He's a helpless kitten that did not ask to be born! There is no need for this cruelty! If anyone can offer him a permanent or foster home then please do call us. 27.6.2010 Mikey, looking & feeling a lot better after a weeks care.
JACKSON 5.6.2010 Jackson is now really enjoying life, his wound has healed well, he's made a great recovery from his dreadful ordeal.
Despite only having 3 legs he's up and about using them all, even using the litter tray. He's ready to go to a kind and caring home where he will be safe in the future. Can anyone help him?
25.4.2010 Aisling (as we named her) was found at the side of the road from Kiltimagh to Balla last night. In a severe state of malutrition obviously she had not long given birth to pups. Her teats are full of milk and she was in a highly nervous and distressed state. The misery this dog has endured can be seen so clearly in her eyes. However, thanks to Seamus and his family who soon managed to win her around and even took her for a short walk. She is a very gentle and affectionate dog who will take time to restore to good health and body weight. She weighed just 21.kg and her actual body weight for her age and size should be between 35 - 40 kg. We have her in foster care and she's doing well, but has a long way to go before being fully restored to good health. She has the most adorable, gentle nature as do most hounds.
19.3.2010 This male spaniel was rescued and taken to the vets from the Kilmovee area. His injuries were at least a week old and consisted of a bad gash to his back leg, which was broken in 7 places! He allowed himself to be lifted into a vehicle, although he would be in agony, a kind & gentle dog who had not been well cared for, full of fleas & his ears full of mites, approx 6-7 years old. Our thanks to Vivian Hussey who immediately gave pain relief and took an x-ray. Sadly this was a dog that could not be restored to good health and had to be p.t.s. He would have received such a bang from a large vehicle to cause such injuries. If only they had thought to help this dog then he would not to have endured the pain he was in for a whole week! If anyone recognises him then do please call us so we can notify the owner.
Dehydrated dogs locked in car, Infested with 'fleas and worms "I look after the dogs better than I look after myself,' claims their owner" A KILTIMAGH man who left two small dogs in a car outside his house on a hot day last autumn has been forced to hand over the animals to Mayo Society for the Prevention of Cruelty' to. Animals (MSPCA). Martin Mc Donagh, No 5 Mountain View, Cordarragh, Kiltimagh, denied that he was guilty of cruelty toward the dogs when he appeared before the local district court. Gda Bernadette Breslin said she received an anonymous complaint on September 25last that McDonagh had left his two Chihuahuas in his car from early that morning. It was a warm day and the dogs, the caller claimed, had been alone in the vehicle since Barn .that morning. Gda Breslin received the call at 6.05pm. The Garda said she went to Mr. McDonagh's house and found that it was empty: A representative from the MSPCA was present and the two small dogs - a two-year-old black male and a ten-month-old brown female - were in the car. "Two of the windows were slightly ajar - just enough to get your fingertips in," Gda Breslin told the court. "The smaller brown Chihuahua was tied to something under the front seat of the car." Tom Lavelle, who works in a nearby garage, was called to the scene and he was able to open the vehicle and release the animals. They were frightened, weak, dehydrated, infested with fleas and worms,' and the younger dog was severely underweight. She also had a scar on her neck. Both animals were taken into care. Mr. McDonagh told the court that he wanted his pets back and he denied any form of cruelty: "I look after the dogs better than I look after myself," he claimed. The defendant said that the reason he left his dogs in the car was that he was attending his sister's wedding. Dogs had been stolen from his back garden when he had been away in the past and he did not want anybody breaking into his house to "steal, the dogs and whatever else they could find". He decided that if somebody was going to steal the animals, he would prefer if they just broke into his car. Mr. McDonagh said he had "fed and, watered" the dogs at 10am that morning. Judge Devins said she was satisfied the. Incident was one of cruelty but she also acknowledged that Mr McDonagh's actions were . the result of ignorance rather than malice. "He doesn't know how to look after them so it's cruelty by omission," she said. Mr. McDonagh agreed to allow the dogs remain. in the care of the family they have been placed with and, as a result, Judge Devins applied the Probation Act.
How Animal Abuse Effects YouThe forces and influences that foster violence towards humans and animals spring from the same roots, and may even be prevented or treated in the same ways. Although animal protection workers have long suspected this, only during the last two decades have scientists, psychologists, and criminologists begun documenting this relationship. Their research indicates: - Young people who are cruel to animals are more likely to become aggressive toward humans as they develop.
- Violent, imprisoned offenders have usually abused animals during their childhood.
- Children raised with intense coercion may imitate this behavior with animals and people.
- Children learn cruel behaviors from adults and may reenact them on animals.
- Children abuse animals to release the aggression they feel toward abusive adults or because of psychological trauma.
This is a Bedlington Terrier, rescued from Castlebar on Tuesday evening, 9th March 2010
CRUELTY & RESCUE CASES 19.10.09 we received a call from a lady in shock at finding 7 new born pups hanging from a tree in a fertiliser bag, where they had been left to die. They must have been just hours old as the umbilical cord is still attached, they were screaming for food, freezing cold and in a very distressed state - so was the finder and we thank her for taking them down and delivering to ourselves as soon as possible. They were in the Coolcon, Garrymore area of Ballindine and somewhere there is a poor bitch maybe left with one pup, who is full of milk, in danger of having mastitis and needing treatment. If anyone has any information leading to our finding the person who so heartlessly abandoned these innocent creatures, please do contact us! All information will be treated in the strictest confidence. We need to help the bitch and try to prevent this happening again.
Our sincere thanks to Christine who is currently hand rearing all 7 pups - we hope they survive, they didn't ask to be born, there was no need for them to be born, there is no need for any 'UNWANTED' pups to be born! We have discounted rates for neutering/spaying dogs and cats. Please, please contact us if your pet needs de-sexing and help to prevent the distress these innocent creatures endured.
CRUELTY & RESCUE CASES On Wednesday 14th October we received several calls asking for urgent help with a dog in 'shocking' condition in the Kilmovee area. Well, we found the poor dog and indeed it was shocking! Old scar tissue was gangrous, testicular cancer had travelled within the dogs body, it had the use of only 3 legs and two teeth. It was literally rotting to death! A sweet natured dog who could have been treated and not had to suffer for months and months on end. Vetinerary staff were shocked! So were we! The smell of rotting flesh was vile. Poor, poor dog, who had to be put to sleep - no more suffering.

September, 09. TESS was found abandoned in the middle of a field where she had been living for days. A really beautiful natured dog in a filthy, matted, totally neglected condition. Our sincere thanks yet again to Yvonne Eckhart for her wonderful grooming. Thankfully today Tess is happy in a caring home thanks to Kieran & family.
Henry after 6 days of treatment! Just gorgeous! Still receiving treatment but he can go to a home shortly 21.6.09 This poor tiny creature was handed in to us for care today. It was thought it had no eyes but after vetinerary examination it appears that it has severe conjunctivitis. Words fail us, what can we say, its appalling! Hopefully it will make a full recovery and we will be able to find a home eventually, despite everything it is friendly and only about 5 weeks old.
HARRY Harry is 18 months old, a poorly bred St. Bernard in a pretty bad state right now. Harry weights 47 kgs and should be around 70 kg. He has a chest and eye infection, ingrowing nails, a slight twist in his spine, which is causing his limp. Its no wonder he's unhappy and very uncomfortable! He's receiving antibiotics & a very expensive food supplement to help his joints, plus pain relief, no more can be done at this stage until he gains weight and a little condition. According to our vet all these problems were caused through poor feeding & care as a pup. Harry is a typical example of a dog from a 'back yard breeder' who does not care for animals at all, they're in it for the money only. Harry is now probably too weak to sire any pups so he's been thrown out! Shame on them to reduce a beautiful dog to the state he's in now, but we will nurse him through, he's good natured and has suffered enough.

MORLEY was found in a dreadful state in the Dunmore area. He's just a young pup about 4 months old. You can see for yourself the extent of some of his injuries, it just isn't possible to photograph them all, but his knee was out of place and had to be manipulated back into position, his whole body full of severe grazes and cuts that were infected, indicating that they were old injuries and didn't happen yesterday! He is still receiving treatment in the vets and in spite of all his suffering he's still friendly and gentle. His injuries are consistent with being thrown from a car, not from an accident. He would have been in such terrible pain for at least two weeks and its hard to believe that people would have passed him by and not made a phone call to ourselves or another welfare organisation, or indeed picked him up and taken him to a vet. Our thanks to the kind people who finally rang in for help as they probably saved him from a miserable death from blood poisoning.
DERRY 25 FEBRUARY 2009 This is Derry, a young male dog abandoned on the Knock - Ballyhaunis Road. It only took two attemps to get a wag of his pathetic tail despite his terror. Who would do this to a dog? He doesn't have any fat on his poor body at all! His skin is in the most terrible state and he has been so very badly treated, still he's friendly and will walk on a lead - now that he can walk! It took 2 days of rest and food before poor Derry stopped crawling on his stomach towards people. A kind natured and gentle dog that we will heal.

MARTY 25 FEBRUARY 2009 Marty is a small male terrier mix who was found in a bad state in the Ballinrobe area. It was evident upon rescuing him that he had severe damage to his mouth, upon being vet checked he was found to have a broken jaw and must have been in agony, how it happened we don't know, it could have been caused by a kick from a person or large animal, or even a knock from a car. His jaw was broken in TWO places, badly infected, which meant it was not a new injury.
Marty has now had extensive treatment and is well on the way to recovery, he's lively enough, very friendly and otherwise healthy. A really lovely little fella who deserves a kind home after all his suffering. He will be a lovely pet. MAYO SPCA on 09496 31888/086 803 2592
KILLIAN 25 February 2009 KILLIAN 08 MARCH 2009 Our thanks to Dee who spent several hours patiently grooming this beautiful dog. Killeen is a mature male collie mix abandoned in the Swinford area, totally matted, filthy, starving and just a bag of bones - not an ounce of fat on his poor body. He took up residence in another dogs kennel and was virtually in a state of collapse, so weak and suffering from such severe malnutrition. For now we are feeding him small amounts on a regular basis and letting him rest - he is exhausted! Such a sweet natured gentle creature never deserved this treatment. He is such a loving dog and we know he doesn't look beautiful right now but he will when he has gained weight and been cleaned up. He deserves a kind home to make up for all his suffering and the miserable existence he must have had up until now. He's quiet, placid and so eager to please.

This little dog was rescued on the Dunmore Road, Cloonfad, 05 February. Minnie's skin is absolutely red raw under her filthy matted coat, the most likely cause for this is lying in her own urine. She has ever indication of a dog that was kept caged for breeding purposes. Maybe she didn't produce or rear pups and so was dumped! We would urge people not to purchase pups born in such cruel circumstances. It is common to keep a bitch caged, never let out, no social interaction or stimulation and certainly no consideration given to hygiene! Minnie is still under vetinerary care for her chest infection, she will be groomed when well and is on pain relief for her skin, she is now so much happier and walks well on a lead. No animal deserves to be treated like this! UPDATE 14 FEBRUARY 2008 - A KIND HOME NOW AWAITS MINNIE

BUBBLES Left tied to a tree Christmas '08, half his body weight, filthy, stinking matted, starving. Now happy in his new home with Majella and renamed 'Dudley. Our sincere thanks to Yvonne Eckhart, groomer extraordinaire, who donated four hours of her time and great skill to groom this poor fella. (09496 76855/mobile 087 966 4359).
This poor cat was rescued from Mulranny, Co. Mayo in February '08. Unfortunately the vet could do little to help her.
Val ejected from a car Christmas Eve 2008. The filth & matting weighed as much as she did!
CONOR Chest infection, infested with lice, severe malnutrition, traumatised. It took 6 months to restore little Conor to full health.
Ginger Ginger - a young mare rescued in appalling condition. Restored to health and happily rehomed. March '08
SPEARED KILKELLY DOG We were too late to help this poor creature found in a shed by a school girl in Kilkelly! We advertised in the local press and radio for anyone who may recognise or own it but did not receive one single call giving any information. We can only hope it was already dead when someone threw this 'spear' into it. One of our Welfare Officers had the very unpleasant task of taking photographs.
Attempt to kill Kitten using a washing machine lid A young Crossmolina woman came before Ballina District Court on a charge of animal cruelty after she attempted to kill a kitten by putting the lid of an old washing machine over the creature and jumping on it. The twenty-two-year-old from Crossmolina, was fined €450 and ordered to pay €573.54 in costs towards the North West Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NWSPCA) and the Mayo Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Garda Jude Gallagher told Judge Derek McVeigh how she received a report of cruelty to an animal at the home of Callaghan, where she resides with her parents. When Garda Gallagher arrived at the house, she was met by two members of the Mayo SPCA. They went to the back of the house where they found a kitten that had been completely flattened on one side of its body. The kitten was soaking wet and in a very distressed state, so much so that the animal bit one of the Mayo SPCA representatives when they tried to assist it. Garda Gallagher explained there was an item resembling the lid of an old washing machine near where the cat lay. It appeared someone had taken the lid, placed it over the cat and jumped on it in an attempt to kill the animal. There were a number of cats at the girls' home. These were taken away by the Mayo SPCA. The injured kitten was taken to a vet and as a result of treatment survived the attack. Garda Gallagher presented pictures of the injured kitten to Judge McVeigh who said it appeared as if the cat had been badly beaten. Solicitor for Callaghan, Mr. John Gordon, said he understood this matter had been extremely distressing for Garda Gallagher. The cats at the Callaghans’ home are actually stray animals. The Callaghans fed these animals but they did not actually belong to them.
