KEELY CRUELTY JANUARY 2012 We named this poor dog KEELY, he's male and fully grown. Handed in for our care from Achill Island he was rushed straight to a vet. Keely could be described as a skeleton with fur, and weighs only 12 kg. Its a miracle he is still alive. He's the sweetest natured dog and it is so sad for all concerned to see any animal left to suffer in this condition. With careful feeding and care we hope to see him fit and well in the fullness of time. Our thanks to the kind people who called us instead of ignoring his plight. If you can help in any way by offering a permanent or temporary home please do call us. Please call 09496 31888 or 086 803 2592 email

JANUARY 2012 - CRUELTY These 2 male collie pups were heartlessly abandoned on a bog, almost 4 weeks old. They are currently in the vets fighting for their lives and we are hoping they pull through. Yet again we are faced with this cruel abandonment of young pups who need not be born in the first place! Please, please remind anyone you know with unneutered/unspayed pets to apply for discounted price vouchers to avoid unwanted litters of pups/kittens. Please call 09496 31888 or 086 803 2592 email

December, 2011 These 2 adorable terrier x pups were heartlessly thrown from a car in a plastic bag. Fortunately for them a lady out walking her own dog saw the incident and brought them to us. Only approx 5 weeks old they were successfully reared and rehomed.
These 2 hounds were found in the Castlebar area by a member of the public. They are shocked by the terrible condition they are in. Every bone in their poor bodies is sticking out, they have skin conditions, pressure sores, their paws appear to have been burned by a substance and they also have bits of tar stuck to them. Obviously they are suffering from severe malnutrition and will need careful feeding. We are hoping its not too late! Both such gentle creatures as can be seen by the photo of them eating from the same bowl - although starving they will not fight over food! Currently being fostered by the person who found them (we are full) it would be appreciated if anyone could donate a cast-off dog coat, bag of sensitive food or any small donation to help towards the vets bills for them.
CRUELTY CASE
We named this poor dog 'Tasha', rescued on 14th November from the main Claremorris Road. She was so exhausted she just fell into Marian's arms! Underweight and with fresh cuts/gashes all over her body, her paws bleeding, she offered no resistance at all, and instead just wanted a big cuddle. We believe she may have been someone's pet as although she is so depressed its obvious she has been loved and cared for by someone - and is desperate for affection. A beautiful dog, unusual in her looks she is resting and eating and slowly feeling better. If anyone recognises her or can offer a permanent or temporary home it would help her recover from her obviously traumatic experience so much faster. December, 2011 Tasha looking and feeling so much better - she really is the most beautiful natured dog. Please call 09496 31888 or 086 803 2592 email

CRUELTY & RESCUE This dog was rescued and brought into care from a filthy shed, with no bedding, water, or comfort of any kind. Chained, fed on bread and milk, forced to lie in his own excrement, he's blind and has cataracts, which probably could have been avoided if treatment had been sought earlier. 10 years old, he had no access to outdoors at all, no companionship and a miserable existence. Now safe, washed & eating normal food he at least has a quality of life!
Unfortunately this dear little kitten who was so heartlessly abandoned lost his struggle for life after 4 days. Up until that time he was eating, playing, very active and responsive, but took a sudden downturn and we rushed him to the vets. He had acute pneumonia and slipped away almost on arrival at the vets. Had he not been out in the cold and rain, been fed & cared for properly he would have stood a better chance of survival. Everyone at mspca very upset as he was such a little sweetheart.

26.8.11 Maeve is a young female hound mix, approximately one year old, who we believe was ejected from a black car on the main road from Kiltimagh to Bohola. It took several volunteers to recover her and bring to safety, she was so afraid, is very malnourished, has some slight damage to one of her toes, which can easily be put right. She has been worm/flea treated, had her first vaccination and been vet checked. A dear, gentle dog, who walks well on a lead, is good with people and other dogs. Very placid natured, but we would not rehome with cats or chickens.
22.8.2011 We named this beautiful dog 'Triton'. He is a pure bred male Kerry Blue, a mature dog, not yet neutered due to the severe infection that can clearly be seen on his back. Before being vet treated this horrendous wound was infested with maggotts, the flesh rotting. We are appalled that a dog could be allowed to get into this condition. He would have been in agony!
Scarlet is a young female spaniel/setter x, approx 8 months old, found suffering from acute malnutrition - she is so underweight, but otherwise appears to be fairly healthy. She will soon gain weight, is so good natured considering the neglect she has obviously suffered, is good with other dogs & affectionate. She needs a home where she can be fed 3 small meals a day initially, so someone would need to be at home part of the day and have the time to do this. It won't take too long before she's back on her feet but currently she is resting, eating and sleeping. She will be a really beautiful dog when fully restored to good health. She has been vet checked/worm treated and had her first vaccination.
28.2.2011 This small wire coated terrier is male and approx 2 years old, handed into the vets by members of the public who said it had been straying around their property for around a month! We named him Terry and could not imagine what he has been through, he's very nervous, but not aggressive, desperately wants to be friendly and is so afraid someone will hurt him, but we know that will improve with care & tlc. His neck has this huge bald area, which is sore in places, the most likely cause being a rope tied around his neck. It will grow over in time and has been treated, he has also been neutered, had his first vaccination and been treated for any possible underlying skin condition. He will need a special person to help regain his confidence in humans again, but shows all the signs of having a sweet & gentle nature.
CRUELTY & RESCUE
Elliott is a young terrier mix male dog who was rescued from the Claremorris area by a kind member of the public who handed him into us. What he saw upset him and he took pity on Elliott who, at first sight, appears to have 3 legs, upon closer inspection it can be seen that his front leg is curled way up into his chest and the paw is at chest level. He cannot use this leg at all but can get around quite well. Children were seen pushing him over, which was so easy to do as he's only small, finding the whole episode highly amusing. Disgraceful behaviour towards an innocent creature - wish we knew who they were. Elliott is now safely in our care and we are awaiting veterinary inspection and advice as to which way we can do the best for him. One would wonder who's care has he been in until now?
19.2.2011 Tara is a young hound who had apparently been wandering for some time - she's still quite young, rather depressed & in a thin, nervous & sorry state. She has cuts, wounds & patches of fur missing all over her body. A very gentle dog who is affectionate & good with people & other dogs despite the obvious mistreatment she has received. She will feel so much better after veterinary treatment and has a beautiful temperament.
Nina was abandoned in September, 2010, a female Beagle approx 6 years old. She was emaciated, heavily pregnant, totally depressed & had just about given up wanting to carry on with life. We took her straight to the vets and had her checked out, she had a lump on her neck, that was treated as an abcess with antibiotics, she was wormed, thoroughly examined and we were told that her pregnancy was too advanced to be terminated. We would have done this due to her age & terrible condition. She came out of her depression after lots of tlc, rest, good food etc., enjoyed her little walks, pottered around the kennelling area after Marian, no trouble at all. Happy in her own little way and so sweet natured. Eventually the time came for her to give birth, all the signs were there but nothing seemed to be happening, so we made a mad dash to the vets late at night only to find that she needed an urgent caesarean operation and her poor pups were all dead inside her. She nearly died and needed a month to recover. We placed her with Christine, who kindly fostered her, she lived indoors, loved sleeping on the settee and in front of the fire, slowly gained strength, loved to go out for a walk, her little tail wagging constantly.
Early January Nina was well able to be spayed before going to the UK to a wonderful home, arrangements were made for the spaying & travel, her new family alerted as to her arrival and everyone was thrilled that after all these months of nurturing her she was finally going to such caring people who had waited such a long time for her.
After spaying Nina did not seem too well, although the operation was uncomplicated and the mysterious lump removed at the same time. Within 2 days we had to take her back to the vets only to find that her red blood cell count was very low and she went downhill rapidly - 2 days later kidney failure set in and we had no choice but to put her to sleep. Obviously the lump was a form of lymphona and had invaded her whole system - nothing showed on a scan but the blood tests told the story.....
Poor Nina, after all she had been through and all our attempts to restore her to health and onto a lovely forever home, she finally lost her battle for life.
We are all very sad at her loss. Our sincere thanks to Chris & Jenny, UK, for their very generous donation towards her treatment.
December 2010. Despite all our efforts this adorable young cat did not survive the hip operation needed. Handed into us with a smashed leg and hip requiring immediate surgery. She was friendly and sweet natured. We took the loss very badly as it is so rare we lose the life of a rescued animal.
This sweet, friendly & starving little kitten was handed into the vets on 18.9.2010. Unfortunately the eye had to be removed and the operation itself was a success but the infection had travelled deep into the brain and it was just not possible to keep her alive. A sad situation & a loss that could have been avoided with treatment at the onset of the problem!
AMBER

We named this poor dog Arnie. He was found howling in a ditch in the Cloonfad area. Its no wonder he was howling! Arnie's severe injuries to his back leg were at least a week old, it had been badly broken, his knee had been pulled out of place altogether, with the cartildge lodged farther down his leg, the whole leg was infected. He must have been in agony! Most certainly he was placed in the ditch by someone who was fully aware of his injuries. How heartless & cruel! There were no other options but to amputate his leg in order to save his life. He's a young dog, so gentle & friendly, wagged his tail upon being rescued despite his pain. At the moment he will not even attempt to walk and if you can offer a permanent or temporary home do please contact us as kennelling is no place for a dog that has suffered so much to recuperate. If you recognise him please do let us know.
This sweet natured young kitten was left in the front of someones' garden with yet again facial injuries that suggest it was thrown from a car! He will heal & recover fro his shock, but people's cruelty to such innocent creatures is totally unacceptable and unnecessary! He's such a friendly little fella and we need to find him a home as soon as possible, if you can help do please call us.
14.7.2010 This adorable little kitten was handed into Mayo Spca after being found in a ditch at the side of the road. His horrific injuries are consistent yet again with being thrown from a vehicle. His jaw is broken, the skin missing from his lip and severe injuries to his eye, yet despite being in considerable pain he could not stop eating, we named him Billy and he should make a recovery in time and not without considerable expense. No animal deserves to be treated in this manner. He is still friendly & affectionate towards humans! If anyone can foster Billy whilst he is recuperating do please call us. Billy has now had successful surgery on his broken jaw and torn lip, we know he still looks in a shocking state, but he's happy, pain free, purring, eating, drinking and so friendly. What a special kitten, a born survivor who after all his suffering is still affectionate to humans!
Mikey is a tiny 6 week old kitten who we believe was thrown from a car with a litter mate. The litter mate was squashed on the road, Mikey survived and will recover from his cuts, bruises & shock. He's currently receiving veterinary treatment. He's a helpless kitten that did not ask to be born! There is no need for this cruelty! If anyone can offer him a permanent or foster home then please do call us. 27.6.2010 Mikey, looking & feeling a lot better after a weeks care.
JACKSON 5.6.2010 Jackson is now really enjoying life, his wound has healed well, he's made a great recovery from his dreadful ordeal.
Despite only having 3 legs he's up and about using them all, even using the litter tray. He's ready to go to a kind and caring home where he will be safe in the future. Can anyone help him?
25.4.2010 Aisling (as we named her) was found at the side of the road from Kiltimagh to Balla last night. In a severe state of malutrition obviously she had not long given birth to pups. Her teats are full of milk and she was in a highly nervous and distressed state. The misery this dog has endured can be seen so clearly in her eyes. However, thanks to Seamus and his family who soon managed to win her around and even took her for a short walk. She is a very gentle and affectionate dog who will take time to restore to good health and body weight. She weighed just 21.kg and her actual body weight for her age and size should be between 35 - 40 kg. We have her in foster care and she's doing well, but has a long way to go before being fully restored to good health. She has the most adorable, gentle nature as do most hounds.
19.3.2010 This male spaniel was rescued and taken to the vets from the Kilmovee area. His injuries were at least a week old and consisted of a bad gash to his back leg, which was broken in 7 places! He allowed himself to be lifted into a vehicle, although he would be in agony, a kind & gentle dog who had not been well cared for, full of fleas & his ears full of mites, approx 6-7 years old. Our thanks to Vivian Hussey who immediately gave pain relief and took an x-ray. Sadly this was a dog that could not be restored to good health and had to be p.t.s. He would have received such a bang from a large vehicle to cause such injuries. If only they had thought to help this dog then he would not to have endured the pain he was in for a whole week! If anyone recognises him then do please call us so we can notify the owner.
Dehydrated dogs locked in car, Infested with 'fleas and worms "I look after the dogs better than I look after myself,' claims their owner" A KILTIMAGH man who left two small dogs in a car outside his house on a hot day last autumn has been forced to hand over the animals to Mayo Society for the Prevention of Cruelty' to. Animals (MSPCA). Martin Mc Donagh, No 5 Mountain View, Cordarragh, Kiltimagh, denied that he was guilty of cruelty toward the dogs when he appeared before the local district court. Gda Bernadette Breslin said she received an anonymous complaint on September 25last that McDonagh had left his two Chihuahuas in his car from early that morning. It was a warm day and the dogs, the caller claimed, had been alone in the vehicle since Barn .that morning. Gda Breslin received the call at 6.05pm. The Garda said she went to Mr. McDonagh's house and found that it was empty: A representative from the MSPCA was present and the two small dogs - a two-year-old black male and a ten-month-old brown female - were in the car. "Two of the windows were slightly ajar - just enough to get your fingertips in," Gda Breslin told the court. "The smaller brown Chihuahua was tied to something under the front seat of the car." Tom Lavelle, who works in a nearby garage, was called to the scene and he was able to open the vehicle and release the animals. They were frightened, weak, dehydrated, infested with fleas and worms,' and the younger dog was severely underweight. She also had a scar on her neck. Both animals were taken into care. Mr. McDonagh told the court that he wanted his pets back and he denied any form of cruelty: "I look after the dogs better than I look after myself," he claimed. The defendant said that the reason he left his dogs in the car was that he was attending his sister's wedding. Dogs had been stolen from his back garden when he had been away in the past and he did not want anybody breaking into his house to "steal, the dogs and whatever else they could find". He decided that if somebody was going to steal the animals, he would prefer if they just broke into his car. Mr. McDonagh said he had "fed and, watered" the dogs at 10am that morning. Judge Devins said she was satisfied the. Incident was one of cruelty but she also acknowledged that Mr McDonagh's actions were . the result of ignorance rather than malice. "He doesn't know how to look after them so it's cruelty by omission," she said. Mr. McDonagh agreed to allow the dogs remain. in the care of the family they have been placed with and, as a result, Judge Devins applied the Probation Act.
How Animal Abuse Effects YouThe forces and influences that foster violence towards humans and animals spring from the same roots, and may even be prevented or treated in the same ways. Although animal protection workers have long suspected this, only during the last two decades have scientists, psychologists, and criminologists begun documenting this relationship. Their research indicates: - Young people who are cruel to animals are more likely to become aggressive toward humans as they develop.
- Violent, imprisoned offenders have usually abused animals during their childhood.
- Children raised with intense coercion may imitate this behavior with animals and people.
- Children learn cruel behaviors from adults and may reenact them on animals.
- Children abuse animals to release the aggression they feel toward abusive adults or because of psychological trauma.
This is a Bedlington Terrier, rescued from Castlebar on Tuesday evening, 9th March 2010
14 December 2009 This picture tells its own story...................................... ..........left to die tied to a tree with barbedwire in a lonley woodland in MOYNE LOUGHGLINN. Chris sadly departed this world on Sunday 25th September, 2011. Please see in memory.
On Monday 14th December this dog was found by one of our members who was out trying to find a collie that had been straying around her area for around 3/4 days. We know now that obviously the 2 dogs were left at the same time, they know each other and had probably huddled together at night in the sub zero temperatures we've had during the last week. If this poor dog had moved he would have strangled himself, the barbed wire being twisted around and around and up tight against his throat, he was unable to breathe properly and gasping for air. His thick coat matted with cow manure, his ribs easily felt under his coat. What a way to cause the death of an animal - long, slow, painful - how evil is the person who did this to a kind natured, gentle elderly dog, who even managed a little wag of his tail as the wire was removed. Too weak to walk properly he managed to drink a litre and a half of water without pausing for breath, and eat a good bowl of food, his friend joining him as they both lay under a warm blanket. After a rest and plenty of tlc both were taken to the vets and given pain relief. Apart from malnutrition, arthritis, and minor ailments that come with old age there does not appear to be anything seriously wrong with either dog. The trauma, cold, hunger would not have helped either and we're hoping they can enjoy some quality of life within our care before leaving this world. If you can help in any way or recogise this poor old fella then please call us. It is disgraceful that anyone could do this and get away with it. We need your help to find the perpetrator of this crime. CRUELTY & RESCUE CASES
19.10.09 we received a call from a lady in shock at finding 7 new born pups hanging from a tree in a fertiliser bag, where they had been left to die. They must have been just hours old as the umbilical cord is still attached, they were screaming for food, freezing cold and in a very distressed state - so was the finder and we thank her for taking them down and delivering to ourselves as soon as possible. They were in the Coolcon, Garrymore area of Ballindine and somewhere there is a poor bitch maybe left with one pup, who is full of milk, in danger of having mastitis and needing treatment. If anyone has any information leading to our finding the person who so heartlessly abandoned these innocent creatures, please do contact us! All information will be treated in the strictest confidence. We need to help the bitch and try to prevent this happening again.
Our sincere thanks to Christine who is currently hand rearing all 7 pups - we hope they survive, they didn't ask to be born, there was no need for them to be born, there is no need for any 'UNWANTED' pups to be born! We have discounted rates for neutering/spaying dogs and cats. Please, please contact us if your pet needs de-sexing and help to prevent the distress these innocent creatures endured.
CRUELTY & RESCUE CASES (2) On Wednesday 14th October we received several calls asking for urgent help with a dog in 'shocking' condition in the Kilmovee area. Well, we found the poor dog and indeed it was shocking! Old scar tissue was gangrous, testicular cancer had travelled within the dogs body, it had the use of only 3 legs and two teeth. It was literally rotting to death! A sweet natured dog who could have been treated and not had to suffer for months and months on end. Vetinerary staff were shocked! So were we! The smell of rotting flesh was vile. Poor, poor dog, who had to be put to sleep - no more suffering.

September, 09. TESS was found abandoned in the middle of a field where she had been living for days. A really beautiful natured dog in a filthy, matted, totally neglected condition. Our sincere thanks yet again to Yvonne Eckhart for her wonderful grooming. Thankfully today Tess is happy in a caring home thanks to Kieran & family.

02.07.2009 This sweet natured Shetland Pony was brought into our care at the request of Claremorris Gardai. She had been dropped into a 14 foot bog hole with her 3 legs tied together - so was not intended to be found or able to get out of the hole! The vet will be attending shortly. To see an innocent little Pony in this shocking state is so distressing! Words fail us at the sheer heartlessness shown by the person who did this. Her injuries are terrible and it is believed a stake was the cause. She is receiving pain relief, antibiotics, has had her hooves trimmed and is doing well, however it will take some time for her to recover. The 2nd photo is of her rear end and shows the extent of her injuries and maggots residing there. UPDATE: 08.07.2009. Our little Shetland has been named 'Willow'. She's eating really well, looks so much brighter, her terrible wound is now clean and healing. There is no skin or hair on the whole area. The white coating you can see in this photo is a healing spray. We are so pleased with her progress. She is amenable and uncomplaining, is used to cars, dogs, cats, hens, puts her head so nicely into a head collar, stood patiently whilst a farrier pared her hooves - she has, in our opinion, had a kind family in the past??? Wish we knew who they were! MAYO SPCA on 09496 31888/086 803 2592
Henry after 6 days of treatment! Just gorgeous! Still receiving treatment but he can go to a home shortly 21.6.09 This poor tiny creature was handed in to us for care today. It was thought it had no eyes but after vetinerary examination it appears that it has severe conjunctivitis. Words fail us, what can we say, its appalling! Hopefully it will make a full recovery and we will be able to find a home eventually, despite everything it is friendly and only about 5 weeks old.
HARRY Harry is 18 months old, a poorly bred St. Bernard in a pretty bad state right now. Harry weights 47 kgs and should be around 70 kg. He has a chest and eye infection, ingrowing nails, a slight twist in his spine, which is causing his limp. Its no wonder he's unhappy and very uncomfortable! He's receiving antibiotics & a very expensive food supplement to help his joints, plus pain relief, no more can be done at this stage until he gains weight and a little condition. According to our vet all these problems were caused through poor feeding & care as a pup. Harry is a typical example of a dog from a 'back yard breeder' who does not care for animals at all, they're in it for the money only. Harry is now probably too weak to sire any pups so he's been thrown out! Shame on them to reduce a beautiful dog to the state he's in now, but we will nurse him through, he's good natured and has suffered enough.

MORLEY was found in a dreadful state in the Dunmore area. He's just a young pup about 4 months old. You can see for yourself the extent of some of his injuries, it just isn't possible to photograph them all, but his knee was out of place and had to be manipulated back into position, his whole body full of severe grazes and cuts that were infected, indicating that they were old injuries and didn't happen yesterday! He is still receiving treatment in the vets and in spite of all his suffering he's still friendly and gentle. His injuries are consistent with being thrown from a car, not from an accident. He would have been in such terrible pain for at least two weeks and its hard to believe that people would have passed him by and not made a phone call to ourselves or another welfare organisation, or indeed picked him up and taken him to a vet. Our thanks to the kind people who finally rang in for help as they probably saved him from a miserable death from blood poisoning.
DERRY 25 FEBRUARY 2009 This is Derry, a young male dog abandoned on the Knock - Ballyhaunis Road. It only took two attemps to get a wag of his pathetic tail despite his terror. Who would do this to a dog? He doesn't have any fat on his poor body at all! His skin is in the most terrible state and he has been so very badly treated, still he's friendly and will walk on a lead - now that he can walk! It took 2 days of rest and food before poor Derry stopped crawling on his stomach towards people. A kind natured and gentle dog that we will heal.
MAYO SPCA on 09496 31888/086 803 2592
MARTY 25 FEBRUARY 2009 Marty is a small male terrier mix who was found in a bad state in the Ballinrobe area. It was evident upon rescuing him that he had severe damage to his mouth, upon being vet checked he was found to have a broken jaw and must have been in agony, how it happened we don't know, it could have been caused by a kick from a person or large animal, or even a knock from a car. His jaw was broken in TWO places, badly infected, which meant it was not a new injury.
Marty has now had extensive treatment and is well on the way to recovery, he's lively enough, very friendly and otherwise healthy. A really lovely little fella who deserves a kind home after all his suffering. He will be a lovely pet. MAYO SPCA on 09496 31888/086 803 2592
KILLIAN 25 February 2009 KILLIAN 08 MARCH 2009 Our thanks to Dee who spent several hours patiently grooming this beautiful dog. Killeen is a mature male collie mix abandoned in the Swinford area, totally matted, filthy, starving and just a bag of bones - not an ounce of fat on his poor body. He took up residence in another dogs kennel and was virtually in a state of collapse, so weak and suffering from such severe malnutrition. For now we are feeding him small amounts on a regular basis and letting him rest - he is exhausted! Such a sweet natured gentle creature never deserved this treatment. He is such a loving dog and we know he doesn't look beautiful right now but he will when he has gained weight and been cleaned up. He deserves a kind home to make up for all his suffering and the miserable existence he must have had up until now. He's quiet, placid and so eager to please.
MAYO SPCA on 09496 31888/086 803 2592
This little dog was rescued on the Dunmore Road, Cloonfad, 05 February. Minnie's skin is absolutely red raw under her filthy matted coat, the most likely cause for this is lying in her own urine. She has ever indication of a dog that was kept caged for breeding purposes. Maybe she didn't produce or rear pups and so was dumped! We would urge people not to purchase pups born in such cruel circumstances. It is common to keep a bitch caged, never let out, no social interaction or stimulation and certainly no consideration given to hygiene! Minnie is still under vetinerary care for her chest infection, she will be groomed when well and is on pain relief for her skin, she is now so much happier and walks well on a lead. No animal deserves to be treated like this! UPDATE 14 FEBRUARY 2008 - A KIND HOME NOW AWAITS MINNIE

BUBBLES Left tied to a tree Christmas '08, half his body weight, filthy, stinking matted, starving. Now happy in his new home with Majella and renamed 'Dudley. Our sincere thanks to Yvonne Eckhart, groomer extraordinaire, who donated four hours of her time and great skill to groom this poor fella. (09496 76855/mobile 087 966 4359).
This poor cat was rescued from Mulranny, Co. Mayo in February '08. Unfortunately the vet could do little to help her.
Val ejected from a car Christmas Eve 2008. The filth & matting weighed as much as she did!
CONOR Chest infection, infested with lice, severe malnutrition, traumatised. It took 6 months to restore little Conor to full health.
Jack a bred Bedlington Terrier
Jack rescued December 2008 Jack now happy in his forever home.
Ginger Ginger - a young mare rescued in appalling condition. Restored to health and happily rehomed. March '08

Sadly we felt the need to show this poor dog who was found by a passer-by out for a walk last week. It was drowned at the pier at Bunacurry, Achill Island. We did not think it was already dead when placed in the water as it would have been unnecessary to tie the large block to its neck! Why anyone feels the need to do this when ourselves and other voluntary organisations in the County would help if we could is simply beyond comprehension. We may not always be able to act immediately but will as soon as is possible, as do others. This is the second time this year a drowning off a pier has been reported on Achill! If you recognise this poor creature we would like to hear from you, all calls will be treated in confidence. A reward of €500 is offered for information, all calls in the strictest confidence.
SPEARED KILKELLY DOG We were too late to help this poor creature found in a shed by a school girl in Kilkelly! We advertised in the local press and radio for anyone who may recognise or own it but did not receive one single call giving any information. We can only hope it was already dead when someone threw this 'spear' into it. One of our Welfare Officers had the very unpleasant task of taking photographs.
Attempt to kill Kitten using a washing machine lid A young Crossmolina woman came before Ballina District Court on a charge of animal cruelty after she attempted to kill a kitten by putting the lid of an old washing machine over the creature and jumping on it. The twenty-two-year-old from Crossmolina, was fined €450 and ordered to pay €573.54 in costs towards the North West Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NWSPCA) and the Mayo Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Garda Jude Gallagher told Judge Derek McVeigh how she received a report of cruelty to an animal at the home of Callaghan, where she resides with her parents. When Garda Gallagher arrived at the house, she was met by two members of the Mayo SPCA. They went to the back of the house where they found a kitten that had been completely flattened on one side of its body. The kitten was soaking wet and in a very distressed state, so much so that the animal bit one of the Mayo SPCA representatives when they tried to assist it. Garda Gallagher explained there was an item resembling the lid of an old washing machine near where the cat lay. It appeared someone had taken the lid, placed it over the cat and jumped on it in an attempt to kill the animal. There were a number of cats at the girls' home. These were taken away by the Mayo SPCA. The injured kitten was taken to a vet and as a result of treatment survived the attack. Garda Gallagher presented pictures of the injured kitten to Judge McVeigh who said it appeared as if the cat had been badly beaten. Solicitor for Callaghan, Mr. John Gordon, said he understood this matter had been extremely distressing for Garda Gallagher. The cats at the Callaghans’ home are actually stray animals. The Callaghans fed these animals but they did not actually belong to them.
