CRUELTY & RESCUE
Elliott is a young terrier mix male dog who was rescued from the Claremorris area by a kind member of the public who handed him into us. What he saw upset him and he took pity on Elliott who, at first sight, appears to have 3 legs, upon closer inspection it can be seen that his front leg is curled way up into his chest and the paw is at chest level. He cannot use this leg at all but can get around quite well. Children were seen pushing him over, which was so easy to do as he's only small, finding the whole episode highly amusing. Disgraceful behaviour towards an innocent creature - wish we knew who they were. Elliott is now safely in our care and we are awaiting veterinary inspection and advice as to which way we can do the best for him. One would wonder who's care has he been in until now? If you can foster or offer a permanent home please do get in touch.
19.2.2011 Tara is a young hound who had apparently been wandering for some time - she's still quite young, rather depressed & in a thin, nervous & sorry state. She has cuts, wounds & patches of fur missing all over her body. A very gentle dog who is affectionate & good with people & other dogs despite the obvious mistreatment she has received. She will feel so much better after veterinary treatment and has a beautiful temperament. If you recognise her or can offer a permanent or temporary home please call us as our kennels/fosterers are full and we urgently need to find homes for our rescuees.

December 2010.
Terri, Tilly & Harry did not have a good holiday season!! Their owner was taken into hospital and they were left home alone for approx 2 weeks. The cats were taken into the care of MAYO SPCA. Their owner has now recovered and will be back home soon, hopefully the cats can be reunited with them.
RUBY November, 2010 Ruby is approx 7 years old and was abandoned on waste ground with no grass whatsoever. It was 6 weeks before she was reported and rescued. Ruby was actually eating stones in an effort to stay alive, her hooves were curled and had received no attention for at least a year, her poor body totally emaciated without fat or muscle, she was full of worms - in fact the attending vet stated he had never seen such a variety and a mount of worms in any animal he had treated previously. After treatment her feet were so sore she could barely walk but eventually on fine days she managed to walk a short distance onto grass. December 2010. This month sees Ruby so much improved and she will be going to her new home as soon as the weather improves. Our sincere thanks to Anne at Horseworld, Ballina for her generous donations of food and blankets.
ABANDONDED HORSES

5 horses appear to have been abandoned outside Ballyhaunis. If you recognise them or can offer a home then please do contact Marian on 086 803 2592 13.7.2010 After these horses being in situ for approximately 3 weeks, all arrangements had been made to remove them when somebody arrived with horse boxes and took them away. We can only conclude that the horses had been placed on the land for the purpose of 'free grazing'! It points to someone fairly local being the owner as yesterday the horses were rounded up, separated, and all volunteers involved were to go back today to place them in horse boxes and onto their own land. This took a great deal of time organising, phoning, tramping around in the pouring rain only to find they had been removed at the 11th hour! They will probably turn up again elsewhere now for free grazing, but next time we'll recognise them and hopefully be able to pinpoint the owner.
On Tuesday 11th May we received a call from a member of the public stating that 6 Shetland Ponies had been abandoned on the road in front of his property and he had removed them into an orchard but was unable to keep them. He had reported the matter to local Gardai and was advised to leave it for a few days. In view of the situation we had no choice but to bring them into care as two were heavily in foal. Stray horses/ponies are the responsibility of Mayo County Council and the Dog Warden normally deals with such cases. Thankfully after several days we managed to find the owner who alleges they must have deliberately been let out of their field. We don't know and are not here to judge but would point out that this was an extra workload on our already overstretched volunteers & funds, and respectfully remind folks to mind their animals, padlock the gates and microchip their ponies in accordance with rules laid down by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries & Food. Contravention of their rules is an offence. Details available on their website www.agriculture.gov.ie

This sweet natured female Jack Russell was rescued from Castlebar from a very severe skin condition which had been neglected by her owners for a long time. She will recover but it will take time & continuous treatment.
19.3.2010 This male spaniel was rescued and taken to the vets from the Kilmovee area. His injuries were at least a week old and consisted of a bad gash to his back leg, which was broken in 7 places! He allowed himself to be lifted into a vehicle, although he would be in agony, a kind & gentle dog who had not been well cared for, full of fleas & his ears full of mites, approx 6-7 years old. Our thanks to Vivian Hussey who immediately gave pain relief and took an x-ray. Sadly this was a dog that could not be restored to good health and had to be p.t.s. He would have received such a bang from a large vehicle to cause such injuries. If only they had thought to help this dog then he would not to have endured the pain he was in for a whole week! If anyone recognises him then do please call us so we can notify the owner.
20.12.09 This beautiful friendly young kitten was rescued in Claremorris by one of our supporters who has previously adopted 2 dogs and 2 cats from Mayo SPCA. As you can see this little cat needed help as she had a badly infected eye and 'flu, however, as she approached people in the street, going from one to another, having the sense to know a human could help her, she was kicked away. How disgraceful! Thankfully Magda saw this, stopped it, picked up the kitten and took her immediately to a vet where she was treated immediately and will make a good recovery - tended carefully by one of our adopted hounds! Thank you Magda for your kindness and prompt action.
14 December 2009 This picture tells its own story...................................... ..........left to die tied to a tree with barbedwire in a lonley woodland in MOYNE LOUGHGLINN. On Monday 14th December this dog was found by one of our members who was out trying to find a collie that had been straying around her area for around 3/4 days. We know now that obviously the 2 dogs were left at the same time, they know each other and had probably huddled together at night in the sub zero temperatures we've had during the last week. If this poor dog had moved he would have strangled himself, the barbed wire being twisted around and around and up tight against his throat, he was unable to breathe properly and gasping for air. His thick coat matted with cow manure, his ribs easily felt under his coat. What a way to cause the death of an animal - long, slow, painful - how evil is the person who did this to a kind natured, gentle elderly dog, who even managed a little wag of his tail as the wire was removed. Too weak to walk properly he managed to drink a litre and a half of water without pausing for breath, and eat a good bowl of food, his friend joining him as they both lay under a warm blanket. After a rest and plenty of tlc both were taken to the vets and given pain relief. Apart from malnutrition, arthritis, and minor ailments that come with old age there does not appear to be anything seriously wrong with either dog. The trauma, cold, hunger would not have helped either and we're hoping they can enjoy some quality of life within our care before leaving this world. If you can help in any way or recogise this poor old fella then please call us. It is disgraceful that anyone could do this and get away with it. We need your help to find the perpetrator of this crime.

On Friday 6th November we received a call saying that a young seal pup appeared to be in distress on the beach at Rosses Point. Frances Barrett, Welfare Officer with MAYO SPCA, drove out to assess the situation. The seal kept trying to make its way back to the sea but was unable to do so, it had a discharge from its nostrils and Frances managed to send a photo by mobile phone to the Seal Sanctuary who advised it was quite sick and needed treatment. With the aid of family members, a sheet and large box Frances successfully (eventually) placed the seal safely in the box, put it in her car and took it home to await the arrival of a specialised seal ambulance to take the poor creature back to Dublin for treatment. Well done Frances! Quite a job getting a strong young seal into a box! We're now waiting to hear whether or not the seal has made a good recovery and hopefully meet up and watch him safely returned to his natural environment. Thanks to the local fishmongers who provided a good strong box. Just another aspect of the work our volunteers undertake......

This beautiful white male cat was named BARRY (White) and was rescued by a local vet who unfortunately had to amputate his leg. No owner has come forward and he needs a kind, safe home and environment. He will not have a problem moving/walking etc., but of course it would be difficult to climb a tree if he should be chased by another animal. He's a very loving, sweet natured cat, who has also been neutered and is now in good good physical condition, litter trained and we believe to be slightly less than a year old.

TRIPOD was brought into care on Sunday evening 11.9.09 and taken straight to the vets (thank you Noreen) many people, including a vet and the dog warden had been trying to get hold of him for some time due to severe injuries to his leg, part of his paw was missing which resulted in a severe infection in the bone. Ufortunately if his life was to be saved then amputation of his front left leg was necessary. Two days after surgery TRIPOD was out walking on a lead and able to jump in & out of Marian's van - what a pretty amazing dog! He would have been used to managing with only 3 legs for some time and at least is now free from pain. Basically he's a nice collie (male) who has had a pretty rotton time and is proving himself affectionate and in need of one-to-one attention to help him recover from his ordeal. If anyone can find a place in their life and heart for this long suffering dog then do please contact us. Our sincere thanks to Vivian Hussey @ Breaffy Vetinerary Clinic for his wonderful surgery on Tripod. 28.10.2009 TRIPOD went happily to a his new home today. Our sincere thanks to Pat Kelly, Sligo, for his kindness in adopting TRIPOD who will be his constant companion.

UPDATE: 22 October 2009 Reunited with her owner. On Sunday 18th October we had to bring this beautiful natured mature dog immediately to the vets. Hoping upon hope that the nose was not cancerous. Thankfully it isn't, its a condition called 'collie nose' and could very easily have been treated, now its badly infected, causing this dog a great deal of pain, especially when it tries to eat. Once under control it can inexpensively treated by steroid tablets. So, why would anyone allow what has obviously been a loving and affectionate pet, originally probably an expensive bred dog, to get into this disgusting state?
| This sweet young kitten was named LUCKY. A passer by in Charlestown saw it being thrown into a river and immediately went to its rescue. Soaked and in shock it is recovering very well from its ordeal and is such a beautiful looking creature. Apparently two more were picked up the day before so yet again someone is 'dumping' kittens who never asked to be born. If you can offer a home please do call us. | AIDAN is approx 8 weeks old and was rescued from a local hotel. Somehow he had become trapped in a hollow wall panel and to the best of our knowledge spent 5 days there before anyone called for help. With the assistance of the maintenance manager the wall had to be dismantled and poor Aiden grabbed as he made a terrified dash for freedom! He's somewhat shell shocked but recovering well, enjoying eating and a nice bed. Our sincere thanks to Ann Gill & her Daughter, without who's help poor Aidan would nearly be dead and still trapped in the wall. |

These two sweet pet rabbits were heartlessly abandoned on a building site in the Knock area! They could have easily been attacked and killed as they're just so innocent. Our sincere thanks to Christine for giving them a caring home.
PIP PIP brought into care April '09 in a filthy, stinking, matted condition. Our thanks to Yvonne Eckhart for her wonderful grooming.

Porto is a female bred West Highland Terrier found wandering in this shocking matted & filthy state.
BELLA is a young female collie 5 months old handed into our care as an unwanted 'stray'. She's a very friendly, affectionate and obedient dog, and volunteers were at a loss to understand why she was so reluctant to walk on a lead. Closer inspection revealed this shocking gash in her neck and its no wonder she didn't want a collar and lead on her poor neck, she must have been in such pain, but not a whimper or snap from her, just unwillingness to walk. Its very obvious that this horrible injury has been caused by her being tied with rope directly around the neck and probably for quite a long time and far too tight! BELLA still recuperating but very happy in her new home. Our thanks to Lisa.

This dog wandered into people in the Annagh area of Ballyhaunis, on the small side, so friendly, tail wagging constantly, very gentle and obedient. His eyes are literally fluorescent! In all the years of rescuing animals we have never seen anything like this and rushed the poor fella to the vets! He has a condition called KERATITIS ENTROPION, which in simple terms means his eyelids are turned inwards and his lashes have rubbed constantly across his eye causing them to be ulcerated, something that could have been easily treated well before now! He would have been in agony! Anyone who ever had a lash in their eye knows how painful it can be - so imagine all of them - bottom and top lids, his bottom lid is turned completely inwards, and still he's so sweet. He's being operated on today 2.5.09 and was given immediate pain relief. His eyes and eyesight will never to completely normal as the damage is done through lack of earlier treatment. If you have ever seen this poor creature or know who his owner was then please do let us know. They abandoned him after he's suffered so much and should be ashamed, as should anybody else that saw this dog and did NOTHING!

8.4.09 Voluntary welfare officers had the unpleasant task of removing 2 dogs from a shed behind a derelict house where they had been left alone for a year - to live in their own filth, most of the roof of the shed was gone so therefore, no shelter, food thrown in a few times a week. Our understanding is that they were house pets until their owner went into hospital a year ago. They were then removed to the shed and left. We are going to give them every chance to adapt and adjust to human contact again! Our thanks to Marian, Lucy & Joe for undertaking this very difficult rescue.

Sunday 15.2.2009 This lovely Deer had been tied to a post by its antlers, possibly to attract others in order to shoot them. It had a bad leg injury. Every effort was made to save its life, unfortunately he died later. You can read the full story in Mayo Echo. Mayo Echo 04 March 2009 Page 1 Mayo Echo 04 March 2009 Page 2
CHARLIE & SHEBA & MOLLY
Charlie, Sheba and Molly were locked in a shed their entire lives, they didn't understand anything and were afraid of everything - sunlight, grass, people, noise. Kindly adopted by Michael and Jeanette Bloor who have worked tirelessly with all three. We do not know anyone else that would have even considered taking them on. They will never be completely normal but have such a wonderful quality of life. Diary kindly provided by their hardworking and devoted owners. Our sincere thanks to them.
Frosty! Rescued January, '09. Untreated diabetes, the worst skin infection the vet had ever seen, too weak to stand, severe abdominal pain and left outside with no shelter from the weather, covered in his own excrement and urine. Thankfully we were able to give him 9 days of pain relief, love, warmth, kindness, food. A beautiful natured dog who probably could have been saved if his owner had taken him for vetinerary treatment earlier.

Cassidy/Scooter Cassidy now renamed Scooter. Rescued as a kitten with both front legs and his tail broken. Now recovered, although he'll always have a bit of a limp, and happily rehomed with Annette.
The Swan Swan rescued last May suffering from malnutrition and successfully restored to health and returned to its mate.
Leah the Doberman
Leah was a bred Doberman rescued during November, '08, she was in very poor condition and found to have many lesions in the womb probably caused by breeding. Whilst recovering from being spayed she then developed a kidney problem and a tumour was removed. She is now very happy in her 'forever' home with Irra, but still required a further operation after bursting an internal stitch which caused a severe infection. Leah would have suffered a long period of ill-health followed by death if not brought into care and given the treatment she so desperately needed. It makes all the work worthwhile to see her so happy and healthy today. December, '08.
Clarry (now CONOR) is a male collie pup just 16 weeks old, found at the side of the road, too weak to walk, eat or drink, with a chest infection, covered in lice and suffering from severe malnutrition.
Cara is a beautiful black Labrador who was abandoned in the Castlebar area. She had such a tough time and was so distressed. Now so happy in her 'forever home' with Mike.

Seamus and Lily Happiness at last for Lily whose owner died and she was sadly neglected.

Trixie MAYO SPCA would like everyone in the Ballinrobe area and many other concerned members of the public who have rang us to know - this is TRIXIE (tricky Trixie) who has defeated all efforts to rescue her for four months from the Mart in Ballinrobe!. We thank everyone concerned with the rescue of this creature, too many to mention.

PUPPIES Found by a member of the public on Tuesday 16th September - 10 puppies approx 7 days old. All thrown into thick briars on Old Church Lane, Kilmaine. They were not placed there and must have been thrown, probably from a vehicle - singly, over a 150 - 200 metre area. They did not even have the benefit of warmth from each other. Placing them separately would have involved somebody nearly having their arms ripped to pieces by the briars - as happened to the person that found them and called us, we thank them for their kindness and compassion. Nobody expects to find innocent creatures left to die in this manner whilst walking their dog down a quiet lane on a pleasant evening. It is truly disgraceful, disgusting and unnecessary to leave animals to die in this manner. It would have shown some kindness to have put them all together and in a box in a place where they could easily have been seen - they were not meant to be found and intended to die alone, cold and hungry. Why, when a bitch can be spayed or a dog neutered for just 20 euro under the Dogs Trust Scheme. There should not be any unwanted litters born with this help available. Our heart goes out to the poor female who gave birth to them as she will be full of milk, probably in pain and at risk from mastitis and infection. The pups were separated into 3 groups and were hand reared around the clock. Newspaper Article

Chris the Collie Chris the Collie, rescued by mayo spca from certain death in a pound 4 years ago. This is the dog who came 8th in the Ispca's 'rescued dogs' class at the recent dog show - Belvedere House, Mullingar
Mayo SPCA rescued this 7 year old dog, from a concrete shed where he had lived his entire life along with 3 other dogs, never let out, fed on bread, but no water. He was in exceptionally poor condition and suffering from severe malnutrition. Since his rescue and the great care he receives from his foster home, he is coming along in leaps and bounds. He has been named Frank Morris after the prisoner of Alcatraz! His sight is improving and he is so affectionate and loveable. He is truly a wonderful dog to have come through so much. This rescue mission by Mayo SPCA, included removing 13 dogs and many cats, all locked up in filthy derelict conditions. Contact Mayo SPCA Tel: 09493 81966

Mayo SPCA rescued a lovely little pet called Prince, who spent over 7 years of his life at the end of a short chain with no shelter or sufficient food or water. Poor Prince was so thin and a lot of his muscles are so weak that he found itdifficult to climb a step. He also required treatment for a skin condition. Prince came along in leaps and bounds in his foster home with Jim and Ann Kelly. He was so affectionate and sweet natured that they couldn't bear to part with him and he has settled in happily with them at home. Having spent so many years on the end of a short rope, he has no lead or road sense at all - but Prince is now a very happy and friendly pet.
This young Crane was rescued during April, '08. Suffering from severe malnutrition, too weak to fly or move he was successfully restored to health and reunited with his family on Lake Erith.
